Care Guide

Caring for Your Opal

Ethiopian opals are unique among gemstones, containing up to 20% water within their silica structure. This inherent quality gives them their mesmerising play-of-colour, but also requires mindful care.

water_drop Avoid Water & Moisture

Ethiopian opals are hydrophane, meaning they can absorb water. Exposure to liquids may temporarily alter their colour play or cause permanent internal cracking over time. Always remove your opal jewellery before swimming, bathing, or washing hands if set in a ring.

block Keep Away from Chemicals

Perfumes, lotions, hairsprays, and cleaning products can damage the surface of your opal. Apply cosmetics before putting on your jewellery, and remove pieces before using any household chemicals.

Opals are a relatively soft stone. Store your opal jewellery separately in a soft pouch or lined jewellery box to prevent scratching. Avoid storing in airtight containers for extended periods, as opals benefit from a small amount of ambient humidity.

Opals have a hardness of 5.5–6.5 on the Mohs scale, making them softer than many gemstones. Treat them gently and remove jewellery before physical activity.

A Note on the Setting The 3D-printed PLA+ setting is resilient but should not be subjected to heavy impact or prolonged exposure to intense sunlight above 60°C. Clean with a soft, damp cloth — avoid solvents.
