Caring for Your Ethiopian Opal
Caring for Your Ethiopian Opal
Ethiopian opals are among the most captivating gemstones in the world — and with the right care, they will remain brilliant for generations.
Avoid Water & Moisture
Ethiopian opals are hydrophane, meaning they can absorb water. Exposure to liquids may temporarily alter their colour play or cause permanent internal cracking over time. Always remove your opal jewellery before swimming, bathing, or washing hands if set in a ring.
Keep Away from Chemicals
Perfumes, lotions, hairsprays, and cleaning products can damage the surface of your opal. Apply cosmetics before putting on your jewellery, and remove pieces before using any household chemicals.
Store with Care
Opals are a relatively soft stone. Store your opal jewellery separately in a soft pouch or lined jewellery box to prevent scratching. Avoid storing in airtight containers for extended periods, as opals benefit from a small amount of ambient humidity.
Avoid Heat & Direct Sunlight
Prolonged exposure to heat or intense sunlight can cause opals to dry out and crack. Keep your jewellery away from radiators, windowsills, and direct sunlight.
Cleaning
Gently wipe with a soft, dry cloth. Never use ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaners, or abrasive materials.
Handle with Love
Opals have a hardness of 5.5–6.5 on the Mohs scale, making them softer than many gemstones. Treat them gently and remove jewellery before physical activity.
