About Dreymir
Dreymir is Icelandic for "is dreaming." That is what I do. I dream.
I'm Freyr, a software developer living in Denmark, but for years my real fascination has been opals. Their colors make me feel all sorts of things. I love how no two stones are ever the same. Peeling back the rough outer skin to reveal the fire underneath is one of the most exhilarating things I do. You just never know what is lurking beneath the surface.
What Dreymir is
Dreymir is my way of sharing that feeling. I don't want to make mass produced beads on a string. I want to build pieces where a single opal gets to have a voice and speak for itself.
I appreciate a perfectly polished gem, but I am deeply drawn to the raw, unfiltered nature of an uncut stone. I look for the opals that shine their colors through fresh wounds in their own unique way. The stones I use are Ethiopian Welo opals. They are forged from volcanic soil and born from violent events. I frame them as products of raw and unbridled nature because that is exactly what they are. Despite their flaws, they deserve recognition for their volatile nature and powerful background.
How the pieces are made
I wanted to stay true to who I am, so I combined my love for opals with my passion for 3D printing. The settings are 3D printed, which is my way of expressing myself and experimenting with materials.
But it does not stop at the printer. I design the settings so they can be heated up and molded by hand. Every single piece gets a totally unique, personal treatment. Just like the opals they hold, no two settings will ever be exactly alike.
How we choose our opals
No certificate can capture what makes a stone truly extraordinary. I hand select every opal in the collection and evaluate it on five qualities:
- Colour range: The span of colors visible within the stone. The best ones shift across the whole spectrum within a single piece.
- Colour strength: How intensely the color fires. A stone needs presence. I look at whether it commands attention or if its fire needs to be coaxed out in the right light.
- Pattern: How the color is distributed. A broad flash is striking, but a complex rolling pattern is what gives an opal its true personality.
- Body tone: The transparency of the stone. Crystal opals let light pass right through, while dark opals create dramatic contrast. Each creates a totally different character.
- Shape: I use raw, unworked opals exactly as they came from the earth. I look at how the stone's natural, wounded silhouette carries as a pendant and how it catches the light.
I weigh all of these together. Every piece in the Dreymir collection is one of a kind. Once it is gone, it is gone forever.
